Getting started.

Install a theme:

You can install the theme in two ways: through WordPress, or via FTP. The axle.zip file is the Installable WordPress Theme and what you need to use to get the theme installed. Please see the following sections for each method to install Axle.

Via WordPress.
  1. Navigate to Appearance > Themes section.
  2. Click «Add New» and hit the Upload Theme button.
  3. Navigate to find the «axle.zip» file on your computer and click «Install Now»
  4. Wait while the theme is uploaded and installed.
  5. Go to Appearance > Themes and activate it.
Via FTP
  1. Go to «wp-content > themes» location and backup your «Axle» theme folder by saving it to your computer, or you can choose to simply delete it. Your content will not be lost.
  2. Extract the «axle.zip» file to get the «Axle» theme folder.
  3. Then simply drag and drop the new «Axle» theme folder into «wp-content > themes» location. Choose to «Replace» the current one if you did not delete it.

Regenerate Thumbnails

If you install «Axle» on your existing WordPress installation, you need to regenerate your thumbnails to be compatible with «Axle» theme thumbnails sizes, otherwise you need to resubmit all your images manually.

Site title and logo.

  1. Go to Appearance > Customize > Site Identity section.
  2. Press the «Select Logo» button and select the image with your logo. Also in this tab you can change or add the name of your site.
  3. Save changes.

Primary Menu.

To create and activate your primary menu follow the steps below:

  • Log in to that site as an administrator.
  • Go to Appearance > Menus section .
  • Give your menu a name and press the «Create Menu» button.
  • Add few pages from «Pages» tab or few simple links form «Links» tab.
  • Save your menu.
  • Navigate to «Manage Locations» tab (at the top of the screen).
  • In the section titled «Theme locations», click the check box for the location where you want your menu to appear. For Primary menu – Primary Menu.
  • Save changes.

Social menu.

To create and activate your social menu follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to that site as an administrator.
  2. Go to Appearance > Menus section.
  3. Give your menu a name and click «Create Menu» button.
  4. Add your social profile link to the Url input of «Custom Links» tab and click «Add to Menu» button.
  5. Save your menu.
  6. Navigate to «Manage Locations» tab (at the top of the screen).
  7. In the section titled «Theme locations», click the check box for the location where you want your menu to appear. For Social menu – Social Links.
  8. Save changes

Widgets.

The theme supports two widget areas by default: the Sidebar and the Widget area in the site footer. As well as the area for the Instagram widget, if the plugin is installed and activated.

To add widgets to the sidebars follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Appearance > Customize section.
  2. Click the Widget menu in the Customizer to access to the widget customize screen.
  3. Click the «down arrow» of widget area to list the already registered widgets.
  4. Click «Add a Widget» button at the bottom of sidebar. It shows the list of available widgets.
  5. Click a widget you want to add. The widgets should be added in the sidebar.
  6. Preview your site and you should see the content from your new Widget.
  7. To arrange the widgets within the sidebar, drag and drop the widgets in the order you want or click «Reorder» link and click up arrow and down allow of each widget and click «Done» after the arrange operation.
  8. To customize the Widget features, click the down arrow in the right to expand the widget’s interface.
  9. To remove the widget, click «Remove» from widget’s interface in above step.

Post.

  1. All of your blog posts are made in the Posts section of your wordpress admin. Click on Posts to open the section.
  2. At the top of the posts page, click on «Add New» to make a new post. Create a title and insert your post content in the editing field.
  3. On the right hand side of the post page is the Categories box. To make a new Category, click + «Add New Category» and give it a name. You can have as many as you want. To apply a Category to a post, simply check the box next to the Category name.
  4. You can also apply Tags to a post. The Tag box is below the Category box. Simply insert your tags, separate multiple tags with commas.
  5. To set a Featured Image. Click the «Set Featured Image» box and select an image from the media window and click «Select».
  6. Once you have everything you want selected, click «Publish» and your post will show up on your blog page.

Theme customizing.

If you don’t happy with a default theme look, you can always change theme settings in the WordPress Customizer. Go to Appearance > Customize section. The Customizer has a few sections with the settings you can change.

Site identity.

As already mentioned above, in this section, you can upload a logo, change the name of your site or a tagline to it, or not display them at all.

If you upload a logo, the site name will no longer appear even if it is enabled in the settings.

You can also enable the option «Display Site Title or Logo in the Box» to highlight the brand name. The color of the box is set in the theme color settings: Customize > Colors > Site Title Background.

Also in this section you can install a favicon, a small icon that will be displayed on the browser tab. Read more about the favicon here.

Header.

The header – the area of the site which includes that includes the site header, site description, logo, main menu, lightbox search toggle and sidebar toggle.

In this section, you can enable or disable header transparency «Transparent Header on the Home Page». What is it for?

This is necessary in order to remove the background color of the header when the slider is on, and place the menu items and site title directly on the slider. Menu item color on the slider is set in the theme color settings: Customize > Colors > Menu Item on the Slider and Site Cover.

But what to do if your site has a white background and a white menu, because on the remaining pages the menu items will not be visible? Therefore, there is the following item «Transparent header on other pages». Click the check box, and on the remaining pages the menu items will be a color that is set in the theme color settings: Customize > Colors > Menu item and below.

You can also enable or disable the header shadow, depending on your preferences, and set its transparency.

Header Image | Site cover.

The site cover – a decorative block on top of the site, a little more than half the height of the screen, which can be given any background color or you can load any image into it.

  • Enable Site Cover. Enables or disables the site cover on all pages except the home page if the slider is on.
  • Fixed Site Cover. Enables and disables cover fixing at the top of the page, regardless of the page scrolling.
  • The Color of the Menu Items is the Same as on the Slider. Click this checkbox if you have the site cover on and the menu items are not clearly visible on it, for example if the cover is dark and the menu items are also dark. Then choose a more contrast color menu in Customize > Colors > Menu Item on the Slider and Site Cover. The new color will be displayed for the slider and for the site cover.
  • Opacity. The opacity of the background image that was uploaded into the site cover.

Background image.

The theme supports the installation of both the background color of the site and the background image. You can set a background image for the entire site and adjust its opacity so as not to attract attention to it.

Slider.

The slider – the best way to convey to the readers the most important posts for you.

  • Enable Slider. Enables or disables slider on the home page.
  • Which Posts to Show. Allows you to select which posts to display: popular, random, recent or from a specific category (to select multiple categories hold shift).
  • Number of Posts to Show. The number of posts to display in the slider. Do not get carried away, three-four will be enough.
  • Slider Style.
    • Titles on a Static Background. The post title will be displayed on a static background, which will be selected below.
    • Titles with a Featured Image. The post title will be displayed on the featured image of the post.
  • Opacity of the Background Image. Set the opacity of the background image from 0 to 1.
  • Transparent Background. Sets the slider background to transparent. The background image and background color will disappear, only text will remain. If the image is not selected for the slider background, then the background color will be set in the theme color settings: Customize > Colors > Slider background.
  • Display «Read later» Button. Click this checkbox to let your readers save your posts for later with Firefox Pocket.
  • Autoplay. Slider autoplay. Uncheck this checkbox if you want your readers to scroll through the slides themselves.
  • Pause on Hover. Stops the slider when the reader hovers over the slide.
  • Autoplay Timeout. Time to next slide.
  • Autoplay Speed. Sets the speed at which the next slide will appear.
  • Navigation. Enable or disable next/prev buttons.
  • Dots. Enable or disable dots buttons.
  • Animation In / Animation Out. Sets animations for slides.

Content area.

Content area – the area in which posts, comments, etc. are displayed. By default, the white sheet on a grey background.

  • Enable Shadow. Enables or disables shadow around each post if «Gutter between posts» checkbox is checked, or around all page if checkbox unchecked.
  • Shadow opacity. Sets shadow opacity. If the site’s background is dark, make the shadow more opaque.
  • Gutter between posts. Each post on the home, archive and search page will be displayed in its own block. Important! Disabling this checkbox will reset the number of columns to one. You can select the number of columns of the home, archive and search page in the Customize > Home Layouts > Number of columns.
  • Breakpoint. You can set the width of the screen, before and after which the following settings will be applied.
  • Space between posts before breakpoint / Space between posts after breakpoint. Sets the distance between posts for large and small screens.

Home page.

This section includes the post settings for the home page.

  • Display Meta. Posted date and author.
  • Display «Read later» Button. Click this checkbox to let your readers save your posts for later with Firefox Pocket.
  • Display Post Footer. Categories, tags, number of comments, likes.
  • Display «Likes». Enables or disables likes.
  • Display Sticky Post Icon. Display pin icon if the post is sticky. Read more about sticky posts here.
  • How to Display Posts.
    • Full Text. Displays the entire post or part of it above the <!–more–> tag, if it is set by the author.
    • Excerpt. Displays an excerpt automatically generated or manually entered.
      To add an excerpt to a post manualy, simply write one in the Excerpt field under the post edit box. An excerpt can be as short or as long as you wish. Usually, given its purpose, a couple of sentences is fine.
  • Excerpt Length. The number of words in the excerpt.

Archive page.

This section includes the post settings for the archive page and the search page.

  • Display Meta. Posted date and author.
  • Display «Read later» Button. Click this checkbox to let your readers save your posts for later with Firefox Pocket.
  • Display Post Footer. Categories, tags, number of comments, likes
  • Display «Likes». Enables or disables likes.
  • Excerpt Length. Number of words in the excerpt.
  • Posts per Page. The number of posts per page.
    •  Inherit from global option in Settings > Reading.
    • Custom number.
  • Number of Posts per Page. Active if «Custom number» is checked.

Single post.

This section contains settings for the single post and the single page.

  • Display Featured Image. Enables or disables featured image.
  • Display Meta. Posted date and author.
  • Display «Read later» Button. Click this checkbox to let your readers save your posts for later with Firefox Pocket.
  • Display Post Footer. Categories, tags, number of comments, likes.

Home layouts.

In this section, you can choose the way posts are displayed for the home page, the archive and the page of search queries, as well as the number of columns.

  • Number of Columns. If you want to display more posts on the page and scroll less at the same time, select 2 columns and increase the number of posts displayed on the home page: Settings > Reading settings > Blog pages show at most.

Sidebar.

Sidebar – a vertical column for displaying information other than the main content of the web page.

The theme supports one hidden sidebar, which is displayed when user clicks on sidebar toggle in the site header. You can enable or disable the sidebar without removing the widgets in the WordPress Widgets settings. And also you can choose from which side of the site it will appear.

Footer widgets area.

As the sidebar, the Footer widgets area is designed to display widgets horizontally and at the bottom of the site.

You can enable or disable widgets area without removing the widgets in the WordPress Widgets setting and to choose the number of columns, from one to five.

When reducing the screen resolution, the number of columns will decrease.

Footer message

Short message, copyright etc. In addition to plain text, you can also use links, just enclose the word in the <a></a> tags, just like that: <a href=”https://mysite.com”>my site</a>

Navigation.

Here you can choose post navigation style for the home page

Buttons.

In this section, you can change the default button text and choose the position of the button: «at the beginning», «In the center» or «At the end» of the line.

Drop caps.

In this section, you can enable or disable the decorative initial letter separately for the slider, posts on the home and archive pages, as well as for a single post and the page headers. Also set the opacity of the initial letter.

Color of the drop caps is set in the theme color settings: Customize > Colors > Home drop cap and below.

Typography.

Don’t like the default font? No problems! Choose from several predefined fonts for headings and for other text.

Colors.

In this section you can choose a few color schemes of the site, as well as you can change the colors of many elements separately. The theme supports 40 color settings including color of the text selection in the browser.

Color effects.

Just add creativity! Combine blending modes and background color and you will add extraordinary effects to your site.

Blending modes not supported by all browsers.

You can choose blending effects for the site background, background of the site cover, background image of the slider, featured images of the slider and featured images inside post.

Simply click the checkbox «Enable effect» in the desired tab, for example, in the «Site background Image» tab. Select the blending mode and click on color picker. The colors of the background image will change immediately in the preview window of the Customizer. Continue to change colors and blending modes until you achieve the desired result. Then click the «Publish» button.
